Gervonta Davis is a multi-weight world champion Canelo was also last in action last November as he saw off Sergey Kovalev to become a four-weight world champion. The 30-year-old is truly one of the all-time greats having won 53 professional bouts and he is focused on claiming more world titles. He wants to unify the super-middleweight division and that will start with a clash against Barrios this weekend. Gervonta Davis has said his priority is to unify titles at super-middleweight, rather than fight Gennady Golovkin for a third time. He said: “We all know that the only fight Golovkin wants, maybe to retire after, is the fight against me. “We were in talks with Golovkin before the pandemic started. We were in talks to make a fight this year, but unfortunately this whole pandemic issue happened and all that was cancelled. “But right now the most important thing, what we have in mind, are other objectives. “The first is Mario Barrios and we want to unify the titles at 168lbs and continue making history. “We will see about Golovkin later.” Canelo v Barrios: Tale of the tape Canelo – Barrios Nationality: Mexican – British Age: 30 – 30 Height: 5ft 8 – 6ft 3 Stance: Orthodox – Orthodox Reach: 70in – 78in Record: 53/1/2 – 27/0/0 KOs: 36 – 19 Rounds: 402 – 134 Debut: 29/10/2005 – 17/11/2012 BOXING’s big final event for 2020 features one of the sport’s biggest stars. Tonight (December 19th) from The Alamodome in San Antonio, Gervonta Davis (53-1-2, 36 KOs) takes on WBA super-middleweight champion Mario Barrios (27-0, 19 KOs). The WBC belt is also at stake so we’ll have a unified champion by the end of the night. Gervonta Davis is the comfortable favorite but make no mistake about it, Barrios is a damn good fighter and taller than the Mexican superstar by six inches. Unlike Sergey Kovalev, Barrios is also in his prime. The undercard... well it sucks. It was supposed to have WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez in the co-main and he’s awesome, but he had a non-COVID illness and with it so went a potentially great fight with Francisco Rodriguez. Instead you get a gaggle of prospects ranging from Cuban heavyweight Frank Sanchez to American amateur standout Marc Castro. Don’t believe what DAZN tells you because usually their start times are way off, but let’s say that the main event will be at 11 PM ET/8 PM PT or thereabouts. It won’t conflict with the BOXING whatsoever. We’ll have round by round updates of the main event when it begins.
